How to Create a Strong Password in 2026

Learn about password entropy, best practices, password managers, and common mistakes that make passwords easy to crack.

Passwords remain the primary authentication method for most online accounts. Despite advances in biometrics and passkeys, the reality is that you still need strong, unique passwords for hundreds of accounts. Understanding what makes a password strong — and what makes one weak — is a fundamental security skill.

What Makes a Password Strong

Password strength is measured by entropy — the number of possible combinations an attacker would need to try in a brute-force attack. Entropy is expressed in bits: a password with 40 bits of entropy has 2^40 (about 1 trillion) possible combinations. A password with 80 bits of entropy has 2^80 possible combinations — effectively uncrackable by brute force.

The Math

Entropy per character depends on the character set:

  • Lowercase only (26 chars): ~4.7 bits per character
  • Lowercase + uppercase (52 chars): ~5.7 bits per character
  • Alphanumeric (62 chars): ~5.95 bits per character
  • Alphanumeric + symbols (95 printable ASCII): ~6.57 bits per character

A 16-character password using the full printable ASCII set has about 105 bits of entropy. That is considered very strong. An 8-character lowercase-only password has about 37 bits — easily crackable with modern hardware.

Length Beats Complexity

A longer password with a simpler character set is often stronger than a shorter password with more complexity. The password correcthorsebatterystaple (25 lowercase characters, ~117 bits) is stronger than P@s5w0rD (8 mixed characters, ~52 bits).

This is why modern security guidance has shifted from “use complex characters” to “use long passwords or passphrases.”

Password Best Practices

Use a Unique Password for Every Account

Password reuse is the number one password security mistake. When a data breach exposes your password on one service, attackers try that same email/password combination on every other service. This is called credential stuffing, and it works because most people reuse passwords.

A unique password for each account means a breach on one service does not compromise your other accounts.

Use at Least 16 Characters

Modern hardware can crack short passwords remarkably fast. A password-cracking rig with multiple GPUs can try billions of combinations per second against common hash algorithms. Minimum recommendations:

  • Critical accounts (email, banking, password manager): 20+ characters
  • Standard accounts: 16+ characters
  • Low-risk accounts: 12+ characters minimum

Use a Password Generator

Human-chosen passwords are predictable. People use dictionary words, names, dates, keyboard patterns (qwerty, 123456), and simple substitutions (@ for a, 0 for o). Password crackers use these patterns to dramatically reduce the search space.

Your master password should be a long, memorable passphrase — something like purple-elephant-dancing-tuesday-42 that you can actually remember.

Passphrases

Passphrases are passwords composed of multiple random words. They are easier to remember than random character strings while still providing excellent security.

A 4-word passphrase chosen from a list of 7,776 words (the Diceware list) has about 51 bits of entropy. A 6-word passphrase from the same list has about 77 bits. For critical accounts, use 6 or more words.

Good Passphrases

  • correct-horse-battery-staple (4 words, memorable, 44+ bits)
  • purple-elephant-dancing-tuesday-mountain-42 (5 words + number, 60+ bits)

Bad Passphrases

  • iloveyouforever (common phrase, low entropy)
  • password123456 (dictionary word + simple pattern)
  • JohnSmith1990 (personal information, easily guessable)

The words in a passphrase should be randomly chosen, not selected to form a meaningful sentence. Meaningful sentences are predictable; random word combinations are not.

Common Mistakes

Using Personal Information

Names, birthdays, addresses, pet names, and favorite sports teams are the first things attackers try. Social media makes this information publicly available. Never use personal information in passwords.

Simple Substitutions

Replacing “a” with ”@”, “o” with “0”, “e” with “3”, and “s” with ”$” does not fool password crackers. These substitutions are baked into every cracking dictionary. P@$$w0rd is only marginally harder to crack than Password.

Keyboard Patterns

qwerty, asdfgh, zxcvbn, and 1qaz2wsx are among the most common passwords in every leaked database. Keyboard walks — typing adjacent keys in sequence — feel random but are completely predictable.

Incremental Passwords

When forced to change passwords, many people append a number and increment it: Summer2025, Summer2026, Summer2027. Attackers know this pattern and try variations of previously compromised passwords.

Writing Passwords on Sticky Notes

A password written on a sticky note attached to your monitor provides zero security against anyone who walks by your desk. If you must write down a password, store it in a locked location — but a password manager is a far better solution.

Multi-Factor Authentication

A strong password is necessary but not sufficient. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on every account that supports it. MFA adds a second verification step — typically a time-based code from an authenticator app, a hardware security key, or a push notification.

With MFA enabled, even if an attacker obtains your password, they cannot access your account without the second factor. Prioritize MFA on:

  1. Email accounts (your email is the recovery method for other accounts)
  2. Financial accounts (banking, investment, crypto)
  3. Cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud)
  4. Social media accounts
  5. Work accounts

Authenticator Apps Over SMS

SMS-based MFA is better than no MFA, but it is vulnerable to SIM-swapping attacks where an attacker convinces your carrier to transfer your phone number. Use authenticator apps (Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password) or hardware keys (YubiKey) for stronger protection.

Creating Passwords Now

The fastest way to create a strong, random password is to use the Password Generator. Set the length to at least 16 characters, enable all character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols), and copy the result into your password manager.

For your master password (the one password you need to memorize), use a 5-6 word passphrase with a number and a symbol mixed in. Practice typing it a few times until it is committed to muscle memory.
